Rome Masters 2026 — Model Preview & Predictions
The clay swing reaches its penultimate stop. Rome is where Roland Garros contenders separate themselves from pretenders — and where the model’s clay ELO ratings are at their most predictive after a full clay season of data.
The Tournament
The Internazionali BNL d’Italia at the Foro Italico is the slowest Masters 1000 on the calendar. Court speed index lower than Madrid, lower than Monte Carlo. Baseline rallies dominate, big serves are neutralised, and patience wins matches. The model weights clay ELO heavily here — surface-specific form matters more in Rome than almost anywhere else on tour.
Carlos Alcaraz remains sidelined with a wrist injury, which removes the only player who might have made Sinner’s path genuinely uncertain.
The Model’s Contenders
Jannik Sinner is the overwhelming favourite and the model agrees. Five consecutive Masters 1000 titles, a clay ELO rating at the peak of the field, and the home crowd at the Foro Italico behind him. He arrives having won Madrid without dropping a set in the final rounds. The model gives him the highest clay win probability in the draw by a significant margin. The only question is whether five weeks of dominant tennis has left any physical or mental flatness — and historically Sinner doesn’t do flat.
Alexander Zverev is the model’s second pick. Madrid finalist, strong clay record, and a draw that sets him up for a quarterfinal against Rafael Jodar rather than Sinner until the final. Zverev’s clay ELO is the strongest in the bottom half and his serve — which normally gets neutralised on slower surfaces — has looked sharper than usual in 2026. Value pick if you believe Sinner can be beaten.
Lorenzo Musetti is the Italian wildcard the home crowd will rally behind. Rome suits his game — heavy topspin, clay-specific movement, ability to hang in long rallies. The model has him as a genuine semifinal threat from the bottom half. His clay ELO has improved significantly over the past 12 months and he arrives with confidence after a solid Madrid. Quarterfinal at minimum if his first serve holds up.
Rafael Jodar is the breakout story of the clay swing. The 19-year-old Spaniard destroyed Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-1 in Madrid and has a draw that could take him deep again. His clay ELO is rising sharply — the model is tracking his surface-specific data closely. Potential quarterfinal opponent for Zverev.
Novak Djokovic makes his 2026 clay debut in Rome. The model treats rust carefully — a player returning after an extended absence gets adjusted ratings that account for time off court. Djokovic’s draw is favourable through the first three rounds but his clay ELO has dipped from its peak and the model doesn’t have him as a genuine title contender at 38. Quarterfinal exit most likely.
Draw Breakdown
The top half is brutal. Sinner, Arthur Fils, Ben Shelton, Daniil Medvedev, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Flavio Cobolli and Joao Fonseca all crammed together. Medvedev opens against either Tsitsipas or Tomas Machac — a tough draw for a player in poor form. Fils could face Sinner in round four. Shelton is a possible Sinner quarterfinal opponent.
The bottom half is cleaner. Zverev and Jodar on a collision course for the quarters. Musetti, Jiri Lehecka and Casper Ruud fighting for the other quarterfinalist spot. Djokovic has arguably the most favourable path to the last eight of any seeded player in the draw.
Court Speed and Surface Analysis
Rome’s Foro Italico clay plays slower than the Caja Magica in Madrid. The model’s court speed index reflects this — expect even longer rallies, more breaks of serve and lower scoring matches than last week. Players with high clay ELO ratings and strong defensive baselines are favoured. Big servers like Shelton and Medvedev face an uphill battle in this environment.
Model Picks
Quarterfinals: Sinner, Cobolli or Fils, Musetti, Zverev
Semifinals: Sinner over Fils/Cobolli, Zverev over Musetti
Final: Sinner over Zverev
Best value play: Musetti each way. The home crowd, his clay ELO trajectory, and a manageable draw make him the most interesting value proposition in the bottom half. Not a title pick — but a genuine semifinal contender at odds that likely underestimate his clay-specific ability.
